1.Blind showers.

I discovered this a couple months ago when I thought: Why do I need to see what I’m doing? I know the dimensions of my body, the space of the tub and what I need to get accomplished. Closing my eyes is one less form of stimuli my mind has to process. So showering becomes a type of meditation rather than a tedious chore to get through.

2.Air tight work windows.

No matter what, from 2:00–3:00 p.m. I will work on _____. I don’t care if my girlfriend texts saying she’s pregnant, a squirrel flies through the window or a robber busts down the door. I will NOT leave the desk until 3:01. Having this level of discipline will show how productive you can be in a short amount of time with proper focus and attentiveness.

3.Shrink your world down to a more manageable size.

I get it. In the age of information it’s never been easier to get swamped by the tidal wave of (seemingly) important content. Limit yourself to what you pay attention to. For me it’s filmmaking and basketball. If you paid attention to world politics, entertainment, music, sports, fashion, cars, technology and business on a daily basis, you’d never get anything done.

I understand this might sound basic, but realize just how important this is. Your body needs to exercise and water to thrive. You’ll wake up with more energy and you’ll feel much better about yourself. Plus having a great body is just a plus.

•Drinking a liter of water empty stomach as soon as I get up.

•No coffee or tea; teetotaler

•No water while taking food. Drink water about 20 to 30 minutes after food.

•Avoid beverages, instead take fruit juices without sugar or just plain water.

•Drink 3 liters of water every day.

•Eat always on time. If delayed, better skip and have fruits rather than having late food that upsets my system.

I drink a glass of water first thing in the morning. My breakfast is always oatmeal with blueberries, raisins, and walnuts. I usually put turmeric on top, and add a little raw honey. Never sugar. I’m a Beekeeper, so I have lots of honey. I have a cup of green and black tea mixed. No teabags. Most teabags are unhealthy. I also take a few vitamins, and a low-dose aspirin. Plenty of water, but no more food until about 2:00 pm.

I never eat white bread. It’s almost devoid of nutrients. I never use white sugar. I cook with olive oil.

I never fry anything. I sometimes make sliced potatoes, or sweet potatoes, or broccoli, carrots, or other veggies, with olive oil and spices, but broiled or baked. Not fried.

I do eat meat, but mostly chicken or turkey, and never eat charred meat. Burned food is carcinogenic.

I try to never eat anything that doesn’t have some nutritional value about it.

I meditate every morning before eating, thank God for giving me life, and ask for wisdom, guidance, and compassion.

Instead of gulping your food, try eating more slowly.It may help you drop those unwanted pounds, a new study by Japanese researchers suggests.


Also helpful: Avoiding after-dinner snacks and eating anything in the two hours before you go to bed, the researchers said.


The study linked those simple changes to a smaller waist, and lower rates of obesity and overweight.


Compared with people who gobbled their food, those who ate at a normal speed were 29 percent less likely to be obese.But those who ate slowly were up to 42 percent less likely to be obese.


In addition, slow eaters tended to be healthier and to have a healthier lifestyle than those who ate quickly or at a normal speed.


This study could not, however, prove that eating speed causes or prevents obesity, only that it appears to be associated, the researchers noted.They were led by Dr. Haruhisa Fukuda from the Department of Health Care Administration and Management at Kyushu University Graduate School of Medical Sciences in Fukuoka, Japan.


But, eating slowly may very well play a role in curbing obesity, said Dr. David Katz, director of the Yale-Griffin Prevention Research Center in Derby, Conn.He had no part in the study.

At the start of the study, more than 22,000 people routinely ate quickly, while nearly 33,500 ate at a normal speed and almost 4,200 ate more slowly.


Although reductions in waist size — a sign of a potentially harmful midriff bulge — were small, they were greater among those who ate slowly or at normal speed, the study found.


Snacking after dinner and eating within two hours of going to sleep also were linked to changes in weight.Skipping breakfast was not.


Previous research has linked eating quickly to impaired glucose tolerance and insulin resistance.The study suggested that this might be because fast eaters consume more food before feeling full.


Slow eaters, however, become aware of feeling full before they’ve consumed too much.


Slow eating has its pros and a few cons, said Samantha Heller, a senior clinical nutritionist at New York University Medical Center in New York City.

“So why do you want to work here?”


Eventually this question comes up in every interview. Over the course of the last 30 years, I have been and I continue to ask this question all the time.


I have learned there is a limited set of answers applicants give in response to this question and one particular answer is so much better than all the others. It leaves me with a much more favorable impression than any of the other answers.


When I ask this question, here are some of the more common responses and what I am thinking when I hear each answer:



“I have heard the work is challenging and that your company truly invests in providing training and development of its staff.”


I hear: This candidate values us giving her challenging assignment. And she wants us to invest in her development.


“I have heard about your company’s great team and positive corporate culture.”


I hear: This candidate wants me to make sure her peers are people she appreciates and wants me to make sure she becomes part of corporate culture she values.


“I see your company is growing and creating much opportunity for advancement.”


I hear: This candidate wants the company to provide opportunities for her advancement.


There are other responses like these, but some variation of these statements embodies the typical responses I hear from most people. Fundamentally, the candidate is explaining what they think they are going to get as result of getting this job.


“Simple really. I have read your mission and vision. I have gleaned information about you and your company through social media, engaging my professional network, and exploring other publicly available information. As a result, I think I can clearly state four things and I would like you to validate my thinking.”


This is where research and preparation will make an interviewee stand out in a sea of other candidates. Job candidates need to demonstrate that they understand:


What the company is trying to accomplish.


What is making that hard.


Why this work is so important to the company and to the interviewer personally.


Specific ways to help the company achieve its mission.


When a candidate responds with this kind of answer, as an interviewer, I hear — This candidate is not here to get something for herself. She is here, well researched and offering specific ways she can give value to me.


In response number four, I quickly become inclined to believe good things about this candidate including:

Diligent. Worked hard and creatively to understand my situation.


Knows at least the basics of social media.


Has and actively manages a professional network.


Understands my business and my goals and vision.


Realizes what’s at stake should we fail and the possibilities afforded us when we succeed.

When applicants answer in line with number four, I believe we share some common values like:


As employees we show up and do what the business needs us to do. Not necessarily what we want to do.


We become and do what the business needs rather than make the company become and do what we need.


We, the employees, are here to serve the business and the business is here to service the customer. If all that goes well the business will take care of us.


If you are interviewing candidates, try screening for applicants whose response most closely matches number four. And if you are interviewing for a job do your homework and try answering the “So why do you want to work here?” question as close as you can to number four and be ready when the interviewer says, “How much salary do you need and when can you start?”

You might not think that mathematicians have anything particularly relevant to say about your love life. But you’d be wrong–if we’re talking about James Murray, a mathematician at the University of Washington in Seattle who teamed up with Psychologist John Gottman to explore the rocky road of romance. Here’s what the two did. They videotaped hundreds of volunteer couples discussing such things as sex and money. You know–the sorts of things on which everybody always agrees, Learn English right? 

Then they broke down behavioral responses to these high-pressure discussions into recognizable groups, such as whether partner A can be persuaded by partner B, or whether partner A takes offense when partner B makes a cutting remark. A set of equations was drawn up that represented the interactions of these different factors in mathematical form, leading to…Ding!…a prediction as to whether this marriage would last.

Sound like a stretch? Think you can’t possibly tell that much about a couple from a single interview and some calculations? Four years later Murray and Gottman did a follow-up to see whether the equation had made the right prediction. It sure had–their Mathematical Marriage Predictor was right an astonishing ninety-four percent of the time.
Some conspicuous findings included the fact that, in marriages that lasted, laughing occurred five times more frequently than in couples destined for break-up. The team also found that the one behavior that most consistently predicted divorce was the appearance of a contemptuous or mocking facial expression on one partner’s face when the other one spoke. According to the Mathematical Marriage Predictor, it’s “roll your eyes and say goodbyes.”
