In the Spring and Autumn Period, King Jing of the State ofJinfell ill. One night he dreamed that the disease turned into two small figures talking beside him. One said, “I’m afraid the doctor will hurt us.” The other said, “Don’t worry. We can hide above huang and below gao. Then the doctor will be able to do nothing to us.” The next day, having examined the king, the doctor said, “Your disease is incurable, I am afraid, Your Majesty. It’s above huang and below gao, where no medicine can reach.”

This idiom indicates a hopeless condition.

 

病入膏肓

春秋時代,晉景公生了病。病中夢見自己的疾病變成兩個小人再他旁邊談話。一個說:“我害怕醫生會傷害我們。”另一個說:“不要怕,我們躲到肓的上面,膏的下面,醫生能把我們怎樣!”第二天,醫生來給他診斷病情時說:“你的病沒法子治啦!病在肓上面,膏的下面,藥劑的效力無法到達了。”

這個成語比喻事情已經非常嚴重,到了不可挽救的程度。
