Why people trust family businesses more than business in general

Why people trust family businesses more than business in generalA family business is a commercial organization in which decision-making is influenced by multiple generations of a family—related by blood or marriage or adoption. They are closely identified with the firm through leadership or ownership. Owner-manager entrepreneurial firms are not considered to be family businesses because they lack the multi-generational dimension and family influence that create the unique dynamics and relationships of family businesses.

In the lore of family businesses, the unworthy heir is a recurring theme. Weak-chinned wonders are promoted to the top job when their far more capable parents retire or die, only to pursue a strategy that gradually wrecks everything the family built, while long-serving staff mutter “I told you so”.

People trust family businesses significantly more than they trust business in general, according to an opinion poll by Edelman. More than twice as many people want to work for them as do not — and are more committed. Customers will pay more for their products.

English Composition – It is so difficult to start a business

But they shudder when introduced to Junior and his siblings. Nearly two-thirds believe the next generation will mismanage the company and just over half of family business employees think scions are less talented than their forebears.

Hang on, though. Throwing out the baby could also be rash. What looks like bath water could in fact be a cocktail of important family traits that gives the business its competitive advantage.

In 2014, I castigated Rupert Murdoch for producing a succession plan that in effect allowed the family to maintain both ownership and management of their media empire. I wrote that he should instead have emulated Leonardo Del Vecchio, founder of the Luxottica eyewear business, who had passed management to trained professionals 10 years earlier.

Upsetting my thesis, Mr Del Vecchio, now in his 80s, promptly reversed his hands-off strategy, stepped back in to take control and set off on a dealmaking spree, causing share price and governance turmoil.

Meanwhile, Mr Murdoch, having tested his older offspring — Lachlan, James and Elisabeth — in different parts of the empire, has anointed Lachlan and James as the most likely to lead the group into the future.

Like me, you may disapprove of the Murdochs’ style, particularly their UK newspapers’ involvement in the phone- hacking scandal. You may worry about James’s potential conflicts of interest at Sky, the pay-TV group, where he is likely to face investor protest as he stands for re-election as chair, despite being chief executive of 21st Century Fox, which is trying to take Sky over.

But many families are now using a Murdoch succession template. Instead of ditching heirs on the basis of surname alone, they are selecting the siblings best suited for operational roles, testing them in other parts of the business, or setting them free to run their own start-ups first.

Choosing a favourite remains an emotional decision. The potential for error is still great. King Lear remains a fine case study of succession planning gone horribly wrong.

But Denise Kenyon-Rouvinez, director of the Global Family Business Centre at IMD business school, points out that removing emotion altogether neuters one element of family business success.

The offspring of founders are increasingly well prepared. “We often pose [the succession question] as family members versus professionals, as if families aren’t professional,” she told me. “But they may have gone to the best schools in the world and be outstanding.”

Some old assumptions about succession are just a side effect of the business cycle. Handing over to the third generation is often problematic. But many companies have in any case overrun their natural lifespan. Combined with the near-certainty that some of the proliferating branches of the family tree lose interest after a few decades, or decide they need to cash out, dissolution is often unavoidable.

The arithmetic can, however, benefit family businesses that survive. Prof Kenyon-Rouvinez has studied the 30-generation, 700-year-old Frescobaldi wine-growing dynasty. In its 29th generation, the family stopped appointing its firstborn sons to leadership positions, and started tapping a wider sibling group.

Similarly, Central Group, the Thai retailer, employs 51 descendants of the company’s founder. It has traditionally drawn on managers and leaders from the large Chirathivat family.

“The company is growing faster than our babies,” third generation chief executive Tos Chirathivat told the Nikkei Asian Review recently. It now selects outside managers, too, but with the important caveat that they should be chosen for how well they fit the family culture.

“Heir underperformance”, as the academics euphemistically call it, is not a myth. The long-running World Management Survey puts family- and founder-owned businesses whose chief executive is also a founder or from the family at the bottom of its ranking of best-managed groups. But implying that heirs are always too selfish or grasping to give up power — or too feeble to hold it — is to underestimate how quickly some family businesses are growing up.

Businessman Looking at Clock

Here are some cool tech tips to help you save time.

First of all, when you are on a website and the text is too small, you hold down the control key and hit the plus key. With each tap, you make the text larger. You can do this on every computer and every web browser. Just hit the minus key to make text smaller.

Also on the web, when you want to scroll down, don’t use your mouse. Hit the space bar instead. Each time you hit the space bar, you scroll down one page. To scroll up hit the space bar while holding down the shift key.

When you are typing on your Android or iPhone you no longer need to switch to the punctuation layout to get the period. Simply hit the space bar twice. It puts in the period, the space, and the capital for you.

It is the best time when you cook dinner for her

Finally, Google is not just for looking up webpages. It is a dictionary too. Type the word ‘define’ after the word you want to know and the definition appears. How’s the weather in Seattle? Type in “Seattle weather” to get a full weather report. Need to know about a flight? Type in the airline name and flight number. It will give you all the information you need. These are just of a few of Google’s tricks.

Cars of the Future is amazing

Cars of the Future is amazing

Todd: Now, Phil, you mentioned that you actually studied automotive engineering.

Phil: Yeah, that’s correct.

Todd: OK, can you explain what automotive engineering is?

Phil: It’s basically car design and basically technology involved in cars in all aspects: the engine, the performance, the aerodynamics, so it’s basically an overview of all kind of car aspects for the future.

Todd: Cool, so you must know a lot about the cars of the future and stuff. I mean, how do you see cars in let’s say twenty years, thirty years, forty years?

Phil: In the near future I think the big developments will be alternative fuels. At the moment petrol and diesel engines are causing a lot of damage to the planet and we’re going to eventually run out of natural resources, so I think the developments will be towards electric or hybrid cars.

Todd: Right.

Phil: Maybe even using fuel cells such as hydrogen.

Todd: Well, like how many years away do you think this is?

Phil: Realistically, ten to fifteen years away before we start seeing the first ones in production but before we see everyone using them, it’s going to be twenty years, I would have thought, I guess.

Todd: Right…. Now, I once had a student who was an engineer for Chyrsler, Daimal-Chrystler, and he was saying that they already have cars that can drive without people, like you can just say your location and it’ll go there. Have you heard about that?

English Reading Exercise – My Car is broken in the middle of the way

Phil: I’ve seen the technology from a German company called Volkswagon as well. The problem with this technology – it’s brilliant. It’s amazing what it can do, but people’s attitude is the problem. People like the sense of freedom from having a car.

Todd: Right.

Phil: And if your car is driving you then you lose that. It’s like being on a train of something, so you lose that individual sense of freedom.

Todd: Wow, that’s right. That’s a good point.

Phil : And then, there’s the infrastructure.

Todd: Oh, so you think that basically, it’ll never take off, that people will always want to drive their own cars?

Phil: Possibly, although maybe they could develop a system where in the inner cities the system is used, basically to help, because traffic flow and congestion is a problem.

Todd: Right.

Phil: So maybe within the cities, the system could be used, but outside the city, people would always want their freedom in the country roads – the thrill of driving, the excitement.

Todd: Right… Now when you watch movies, you often see cars that can fly, or cars that can go underwater like in a James Bond movie. Do you see that maybe in the future?

Phil: Underwater I think would be a bit pointless, and very difficult to achieve the engineering. It’s possible now, but the engineering is just ridiculously hi-tech, but I don’t know about the flying cars. Maybe in hundreds of years but certainly not in my lifetime and not in anyone’s lifetime who’s listening to this website, no.

Todd: All right. Thanks a lot Phil.

Please use your smart phone in a smart way

If you have a smart phone you probably can’t even remember the last time you asked someone for directions. Getting from point A to point B has never been easier. And with features like satellite imagery and Google’s street view you can find out about your destination before you ever step out the door.

However, such convenience comes at a price. There are a lot of people who worry about privacy and don’t want random people on the Internet snooping around their front yard or looking through their windows.

report a problem street view

Luckily, there is an easy fix. You can ask Google to blur out images of your place. Here’s how you do it. First, open up Google Maps and put in your home address. In ‘street view,’ navigate to the scene you want blurred out. Next, hit the ”Report a problem” button in the lower-right corner. Then, go through the images and choose the parts you want blurred out.

Google does not release data on what percent of requests are accepted but it appears that most are.. There are also similar solutions for other map providers like Yahoo and Bing.

The best way to learn - Playing While Learning

Paper, pencil, whiteboard, textbook. Those are the tools you need if you want to go to school. But recently, you can add another one to the list: an iPad. Because the popular Apple tablet is not only useful for searching the Internet and watching videos, but it is also being used to make learning fun.

Scientists and psychologists now know that we learn better when we are enjoying ourselves, so recently software developers have made iPad applications that look like video games, but have strong educational content. One of the best examples of this new form of teaching is Futaba, a game in which up to four children try to recognize a spinning object, and then identify what it is. The game can be used to teach English, math, foreign languages, or just about anything, and students love it. Plus teachers can even make their own questions. The important thing is that children enjoy the game, and don’t even realize how much they are learning!

So the next time you have to choose between making your child study or letting them play a game, just remember… they could do both at once!

Love always gets the credit for bringing couples together

Love always gets the credit for bringing couples togetherLove always gets the credit for bringing couples together. And most couples would surely agree with that. But thanks to a new dating app just released at the beginning of February, hate will also help start new romances.

Generally, dating apps match up users with mutual likes and preferences. But this new app takes a totally different approach. It brings people together based on their mutual dislikes.

Learning English – love at first sight

The app is called Hater and was the brainchild of Brendan Alper, a former employee of Goldman Sachs. According to Alper, the idea for the app began as a joke. But soon he started thinking the concept could actually work. Taking the idea more seriously, he looked around to see if there was any research to support this concept. Eventually, he found some studies to back up his intuition.

The app is pretty simple to use. You are given a series of topics ranging from Donald Trump to airplane seats. You swipe up to love and down to hate. With this information, Hater will look for potential matches in your area based on what you hate. And with a little luck, maybe you can find that special someone to spend a life griping about things with.

Let’s talk about the movies you like the most!

Let's talk about the movies you like the most

Todd: OK. I’m going to talk about movies. I love movies. I think many, many people around the world today love movies. I probably see one or two movies a week on DVD in my room. I watch the movies on my computer so I am a big, big fan of movies, and I watch them all the time, but I have three big complaints about movies, about Hollywood, my country, that I wish they would change. The first complaint is that movies have too many guns. This really bothers me. If you go into a video store and you look at the cover of all the movies, almost on 50% or more of the movie covers there is somebody holding a gun, and I think this is absolutely crazy. In my country, unfortunately, there are many guns, but in reality, you never see guns. People have guns, but it’s not common to see a person with a gun and in movies, there’s always guns and shooting and killing and violence and blood and I just think it’s unnecessary, so I really wish that they would not have so many guns in movies and maybe not so much violence. My second complaint is that the stories of most of the movies today from Hollywood are terrible. They’re so bad that you can’t even watch the movie. I guess most movies now are geared towards special effects and visual effects so the story is often really bad and I think that’s just terrible.

English Movie – Olympus Has Fallen

I wish Hollywood would make fewer movies, and concentrate on movies with a really good story, like my favorite movie is a movie called “Wallstreet” and it just has a fantastic story. Another movie I really liked was “The Paper” and also “Field of Dreams” and both these movies have really good stories and almost no special effects, so I think that we don’t need so many special effects in movies. And my last thing, my last complaint about movies, is that, or Hollywood, that they stop only using beautiful people. Every time you see a movie, or movie stars, it’s always really beautiful people, but in reality most of us, definitely myself, we’re not beautiful. Most people look average so why don’t they just use actors and actresses that look average. I’m sure that there are many, many really good actors and actresses that just aren’t beautiful and they would do a fantastic job in a movie and it would be a really good story, compelling story, but they don’t get the role because they’re not beautiful and they’re not young, and I just think that’s kind of sad. I know that movies are the way they are because they are geared towards younger people, but I think there’s a lot of older people, like myself, I’m 35, who would like to see more movies with good stories, less violence, less special effects, good writing, and people that look average like everybody else.

What is your favorite lunch?

What is your favorite lunch

Todd: Now, Adrienne, we are both work in the same office. We are colleagues. Let’s talk about lunch. We have different lunch tastes. Why don’t you talk about what do you like to have for lunch?

Adrienne: Ah, my favorite thing to do for lunch, when I’m at the office, of course, is to go for either Indian or Vietnamese. Both are very spicy and I like that for lunchtime. Also, it’s kind of a light lunch I think, so I like it to be light, but somewhat exciting.

Todd: See, I like Indian food and I like the Vietnamese food, but I just don’t like doing it for lunch. I’m a burger-and-fry guy. Like at lunch, I just want a sandwich or a hamburger and a milkshake, quick and easy. It tastes good.

Adrienne: Too heavy for me for lunchtime.

Todd: It tastes so good though.

Adrienne: I know, but I fall asleep an hour later sitting at my desk. Don’t tell anyone.

Todd: So when you do have fast food – you do eat pretty healthily – but when you do eat fast food, what kind of fast foods do you like the most?

Adrienne: Well, I am a sucker for a good cheeseburger, so I really do like to have that, but again, I have to be able to go home and sleep after I’ve eaten one.

Todd: So it just sits there…. So what do you like on your hamburgers? What vegetables?

learn mandarin hong kong – Bananas for Lunch

Adrienne: My favorite cheeseburger that I found – I actually found a restaurant recently that has really good cheeseburgers – and my favorite one is lettuce, tomato, raw onion, avocado and cheese.

Todd: That sounds pretty good. Actually, when it comes to burgers for me, I just want it plain. I just want a bun a hamburger, actually no cheese, a little ketchup and maybe a little lettuce, but that’s it. Just hamburger and bread.

Adrienne: You’re a simple guy Todd.

Todd: I am a simple guy.

Adrienne: See, I like my food a little more exciting I think than you do.

Todd: OK, but as for the sauces, we got mustard, mayonnaise and ketchup. Which do you like the best?

Adrienne: Hmm, it depends on what the other ingredients are.

Todd: Right. See the thing is that I love mustard. I can eat mustard on just about anything, you know meat, whatever. I hate mayonnaise. I don’t understand why people eat mayonnaise. It’s disgusting. And ketchup, I eat sometimes.

Adrienne: If I have a plain cheeseburger, nothing on it, just cheese and meat, and bun, then ketchup and mustard, but if it’s got vegetables on it, then I like mayonnaise. It’s just a preference.

Todd: I know. There’s something about mayonnaise. I don’t know.

Adrienne: Get over it.
