Ode to Mulan Part1

Introduction

Disney’s 1998 animated movie Mulan popularized the legend of the girl that took her father’s place in the army. The legend stems from a Chinese poem, written during the Northern Wei dynasty (386-534), a time where northern china was ruled by nomadic invaders. This is reflected in the fact that the poem refers to the ruler as the Khan rather than as the Emperor. As is common with Chinese stories, it was further elaborated on as a novel during the Ming dynasty (1368-1644) and as a play during the Qing dynasty (1644-1911). Her surname has been variously given as Zhu, Wei, or Hua in various sources but in fact no independent contemporary records exist to confirm her existence.

In her 1976 bestseller The Woman Warrior, acclaimed writer Maxine Hong Kingston’s described Mulan as a source of inspiration for Chinese women.

The poem itself is written in the form of a singing ballad called a “yuè fǔ”.

Chinese Story: The Goddess Chang’s Fly to The Moon

STORY:

(xiāng chuán ,yuǎn gǔ shí hou yǒu yī nián ,tiān shàng chū xiàn le shí gè tài yáng ,zhí kǎo de dà dì mào yān ,hǎi shuǐ kū gān ,lǎo bǎi xìng yǎn kàn wú fǎ zài shēng huó xià qù 。)

Legend says that there were once ten suns in the sky, which made plants wither, water in rivers and lakes run dry. It’s too hot to live on the sun.

(zhè jiàn shì jīng dòng le yī gè míng jiào hòu yì de yīng xióng ,tā dēng shàng kūn lún shān dǐng ,yùn zú shén lì ,lā kāi shén gōng ,yī kǒu qì shè xià jiǔ gè duō yú de tài yáng 。)

Houyi, a young man who was good at archery was sympathetic with people’s torture so he decided to save them. He took out his bow, ascended up to the peak of the Kunlun Mountain and shot down nine of the ten suns one by one, and he might have shot the last one if it was not called off by others. Thus the severe drought was gone.

(hòu yì lì xià gài shì shén gōng ,shòu dào bǎi xìng de zūn jìng hé ài dài ,bù shǎo zhì shì mù míng qián lái tóu shī xué yì 。)

Houyi thus was respected and honored by people as a hero. Young men who were fond of archery flocked to him to learn shooting.

(bù jiǔ ,hòu yì qǔ le gè měi lì shàn liáng de qī zǐ ,míng jiào cháng é 。hòu yì chú le chuán yì shòu liè wài ,zhōng rì hé qī zǐ zài yī qǐ ,rén men dōu xiàn mù zhè duì láng cái nǚ mào de ēn ài fū qī 。)

Houyi later married a pretty lady called Chang’er and lived a happy life with her.

(yī tiān ,hòu yì dào kūn lún shān fǎng yǒu qiú dào ,qiǎo yù yóu cǐ jīng guò de wáng mǔ niáng niáng ,hòu yì yīn yǔ cháng é ēn ài ,xiǎng yǔ tā yǒng yuǎn zài yī qǐ ,biàn xiàng wáng mǔ qiú yī bāo bù sǐ yào 。dàn yīn cǐ yào fán jiān kòng zhì de yán ,wáng mǔ bèi hòu yì de gòng xiàn hé jīng shén dǎ dòng ,jiù gěi le tā yī bāo ,dàn shì shén yào zhǐ gòu yī gè rén chī ,jù shuō fú xià cǐ yào ,néng jí kè shēng tiān chéng xiān 。rán ér yào zhī gòu yī gè rén chī ,hòu yì shě bu dé piě xià qī zǐ ,zhī hǎo zàn shí bǎ bù sǐ yào jiāo gěi cháng é zhēn cáng 。cháng é jiāng yào cáng jìn shū zhuāng tái de bǎi bǎo xiá lǐ ,bú liào bèi péng méng kàn dào le 。)

One day on his way to a friend’ home in the Kunlun Mountain, Houyi came across the Heavenly Empress. Houyi was enamored of the happy life with his wife and wanted to be with her forever so he asked the Heavely Empress to give him some elixir. The elixir was strictly controlled off normal people. The Heavely Empress, however, moved by Houyi’s contribution and affection to love and gave him one. The drug was said very powerful and people who took it can fly to the heaven and became a immortal immediately. However, the content was only enough for one person and Houyi was reluctant to leave his beloved wife alone on the earth so he gave the elixir to Chang’er to preserve and wanted to seek another one for his wife. Chang’er carefully stored it in a wooden box while her action was peeked by the evil Fengmeng-one of his husband’s adherents.

(sān tiān hòu ,hòu yì shuài zhòng tú wài chū shòu liè ,xīn huái guǐ tāi de péng méng jiǎ zhuāng shēng bìng ,liú le xià lái 。)

Three days afterward, Houyi lead his disciples to go out for hunting but Fengmeng who wanted to steal the elixir while Houyi was way, stayed at home deliberately.

(dài hòu yì shuài zhòng rén zǒu hòu bù jiǔ ,péng méng shǒu chí bǎo jiàn chuǎng rù nèi zhái hòu yuàn ,wēi bī cháng é jiāo chū bù sǐ yào 。)

No sooner as Houyi left his house, Fengmeng knocked into the courtyard where Chang’er was working. He wielded his glitter sword and threatened Chang’er to give him the elixir.

(cháng é zhī dào zì jǐ bú shì péng méng de duì shǒu ,zhǐ dé ná chū bù sǐ yào yī kǒu tūn le xià qù 。)

Chang’e had no better idea than swallowed the elixir herself.

(cháng é tūn xià yào ,shēn zǐ lì shí piāo lí dì miàn 、chōng chū chuāng kǒu ,xiàng tiān shàng fēi qù 。)

As soon as she took it, chang’er flew from her house toward the heave and finally landed on the moon.

(bàng wǎn ,hòu yì huí dào jiā ,shì nǚ men kū sù le bái tiān fā shēng de shì 。hòu yì jì jīng yòu nù ,chōu jiàn qù shā è tú ,péng méng zǎo táo zǒu le 。cháng é cóng cǐ jiù zài yuè liàng shàng zhù le xià lái 。)

Houyi was told what was happening in the evening when he returned home from bumper hunting. He was astonished, anguished and then very anger so he decided to kill the evil man. But Fengmeng had fled away. Chang’er was transferred to the moon and has lived there since ever.

(cháng é jué dìng zài yuè liàng shàng zhù xià lái ,yīn wéi yuè liàng lí dì qiú zuì jìn 。tā zài yuè gōng lǐ guò zhe jiǎn dān de shēng huó 。jìn guǎn tā shàng le tiān gōng ,tā de xīn hái shì zài fán jiān 。cháng é cóng wèi wàng jì yǔ hòu yì zhī jiān de ài 。)

Chang’e decides to live on the moon because it is nearest to the earth. There she lives a simple and contented life. Even though she is in Heaven, her heart remains in the world of mortals. Never does she forget the deep love she has for Hou Yi.
