Over 500 Injured in Fire at Taiwan Water Park of Color Party

At least 516 people were injured during an event at a water park in Taiwan on Saturday night after some colored powder sprayed onto the crowd caught fire, igniting a conflagration that caused severe burns to the partygoers. Some of the victims, mostly young people in their 20s, suffered burns over large areas of their bodies (in one woman’s case, 90 percent) and will require skin grafts.

Amateur video shot at the Formosa Water Park indicates the fire erupted as organizers of the “Color Play Asia” event sprayed a colored powder on the crowd of about 1,000 dancers.

“It started on the left side of the stage,” one witness told a Taiwanese television station. “At the beginning I thought it was part of the special effects of the party.

The red, green and purple powder seemed to combust in midair, creating what some reports described as a cloud of fire descending on the crowded dance floor.

Investigators quickly focused on five suspects: The “Color Play” organizer and four technicians working the event, according to the official Central News agency.

Event officials issued a quick apology and promised their cooperation with fire officials.

Rescuers used inflatable rafts from the water park to lug the burn victims away from the raging blaze. And many of the victims were clad only in bathing suits, making them more vulnerable to the flames.

U.S. Supreme Court Legalizes Same-sex Marriage

Same-sex couples have a Constitutional right to marry, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled Friday, ending decades of emotional and divisive wrangling over gay rights and echoing a transformational shift in American public attitudes.

President Barack Obama, whose personal stance has also changed dramatically from avowed opposition to staunch support of gay marriage, called the 5-4 ruling, “a victory for America” that shows “what millions of Americans already believe in their hearts: When all Americans are treated as equal we are all more free.”

In what may prove the most important civil rights case in a generation, five of the nine court justices determined that the right to marriage equality was enshrined under the equal protection clause of the 14th amendment.

We’re going to wrap our live coverage of the historic supreme court decision and the many consequences and reactions thereof – as legal same-sex marriages continue to be issued for the first time in many states around the country.

The supreme court ruled in a 5-4 decision to legalize same-sex marriage nationwide, striking down state bans and declaring that the constitution protects the right to marry for couples of the same sex.

“It would misunderstand these men and women to say they disrespect the idea of marriage.Their plea is that they do respect it, respect it so deeply that they seek to find its fulfillment for themselves,” Justice Anthony Kennedy wrote in the majority opinion. “They ask for equal dignity in the eyes of the law. The Constitution grants them that right.”

Most of the 14 states that had retained bans on same-sex marriage acquiesced to the court’s ruling, and clerks began issuing licenses to happy couples in Alabama, Texas, Kentucky, Arkansas, Michigan, Tennessee, Missouri, South Dakota and Florida. The attorney generals of Texas and Louisiana signaled they would try to resist or delay the ruling, but most acknowledged the court’s decision as “the law of the land”.

Thousands gathered to celebrate the decision and marriages around the country, including at New York’s historic Stonewall Inn. ” It was all worth fighting for”, one supporter told the Guardian, as lead plaintiff Jim Obergefell declared from the steps of the supreme court that the decision ” affirms that millions across this country already know to be true in our hearts: our love is equal.”

Chinese Poem

The poem describes the expression of parting between friends. When the poet is going to leave, his friend Wanglun come to see him off. The poem express naturally the sincere and honest sentiment between the common famer and poet. VIDEO:watch?v=80VopO4–vg

赠汪伦(zèng wāng lún)To Wang Lun

As soon as I get on the boat, ready to depart,

(hū wén àn shàng tà gē shēng)

I hear from the shore loud song and dancing feet

The pond of Peach Blossoms, although a thousand feet

(bù jí wāng lún sòng wǒ qíng)

Is not so deep as Wang Lun’s feeling when we part.

lǐ bái zuò shàng xiǎo chuán gāng gāng yào lí kāi ,hū rán tīng dào àn shàng chuán lái gào bié de gē shēng 。jí shǐ táo huā tán shuǐ yǒu yī qiān chǐ nà me shēn ,yě bù jí wāng lún sòng bié wǒ de yī piàn shēn qíng 。 When Li Bai was about to leave by boat, he suddenly heard the stepping and singing on the bank. Though the Peach Blossom Pool was a thousand deep, it was shallower than the friendship Wang Lun had for him.

Comment:

The four-line poem adpots two abrupt turns in tone. At first the poet says as ever that he is going to take a boat ready to depart when “suddenly” he hears the loud song from the bank. We can well imagine him first startling and then getting excited at spotting his friend-the singer-who stands by the serene beautiful Peach Blossom Pond. The second turning point is the use of “not so deep as” in the comparison that the pond is not so deep as the friendship between him and his friend-Wang Lun. Moreover, the poet addresses his friend directly by his name to enchance their intimacy. The insertion of his friend’s name contributes to the openness, sincerity and independence of his character.

Chinese Hurdler Liu Xiang Announces Divorce

NEWS FROM SOUTH CHINA MORING POST

China’s retired star hurdler Liu Xiang announced his divorce with actress Ge Tian on his microblog on Wednesday – less than 10 months after they got married.

“Ge Tian and I fell in love in May 2014 and got married in September the same year. We ended this marriage today because of our incompatible personalities. We each hope the other has a better life in the future and give best wishes to each other,” Liu wrote on his personal account on Weibo, a Chinese version of Twitter.

The end of their short-lived marriage came after speculations in May that their marriage was in trouble and the pair were splitting up.

Liu, who won the 2004 Olympics gold medal in men’s 110m hurdles and equalled the world record, announced he was leaving professional athletics in April and held a retirement ceremony in a Shanghai stadium on May 17. His wife was not present at the event, neither did Liu mention her in his speech, giving rise to rumours that their relationship had turned sour.

News of their marriage became public when a picture of Liu and Ge leaving Shanghai’s marriage registry was posted on Weibo last September.

Liu’s gold in 2004 was China’s first in men’s track and field events at the Olympics

The hurdler, from Shanghai, has since emerged as the  mainland’s “darling”.

Ge’s Weibo account says she graduated from the Central Academy of Drama in 2012 and has performed in a few television dramas since then.

The Temple of Heaven

The Temple of Heaven was the place where the Emperors of the Ming and Qing Dynasties would worship Heaven and pray for bumper crops. Built first in 1420(the 18th year of Emperor Yongle’s reign of the Ming Dynasty), and then expanded and reconstructed during the Ming Emperor Jiajing’s reign and Qing Emperor Qianlong’s reign, the Temple of Heaven is a grand and magnificent masterpiece of architecture with a formal and solemn environment. Since the founding of New China, the government has allotted a great sum of money to protect and restore the cultural monuments there. The Temple of Heaven with its long history, deep cultural content and magnificent architectural style mirrors the ancient culture of the Orient.

In the Temple of Heaven are situated such main buildings as the Hall of Prayer for Good harvests, the Hall of Heavenly Emperor, the Circular Mound, the Imperial Vault of Heaven, the Abstinence Hall, the Beamless Hall, the Long Corridor, the Longevity Pavilion in a double ring shape as well as the Echo Wall, the Three Echo Stones, and the Seven Meteoric Stones.

The Temple of Heaven is the largest architectural group for worshipping Heaven in the world. In 1961, it was listed by the State Council as ” one of the key monuments under the state protection”.In 1998, it was recognized by the UNESCO as “one of the human heritages of the world”.

The Temple of Heaven is a worthwhile visiting place in Beijing. It is much bigger than the Imperial Palace (the Forbidden City) and smaller than the Summer Palace with an area of about 2 700 000 square meters. The temple was built in 1420 A.D. in the Ming Dynasty to offer sacrifice to Heaven. As Chinese emperors called themselves “the Son of Heaven”, they dared not to build their own dwelling “Forbidden City” bigger than the dwelling for Heaven.

The Temple of Heaven is enclosed with a long wall. The northern part within the wall is semicircular symbolizing the heavens and the southern part is square symbolizing the earth. The northern part is higher than the southern part. This design shows that the heaven is high and the earth is low and reflects an ancient Chinese thought of “The heaven is round and the earth is square”.

The Temple of Heaven is divided by two enclosed walls into inner part and outer part. The main buildings of the temple lie at the south and north ends of the middle axis line of the inner part. The most magnificent buildings from south to north are the Circular Terrace, the Imperial Heavenly Vault and the Hall of Prayer for Good Harvests. Also, there are some additional buildings like Three Echo Stones and Echo Wall.

Four Treasures of The Study

Four Treasures of the Study (文房四宝 wén fáng sì bǎo) is an expression used to refer to the ink brush, inkstick, paper and inkstone used in Chinese calligraphy and painting. The name stems from the time of the Southern and Northern Dynasties (420-589 AD). Brushes and ink are two of the legendary “Four Treasures of the Study” tools of Chinese calligraphers, painters and poets over thousands of years. The other vital elements of culture are the rice paper (zhi), and the inkstone (yan) for grinding the solidified inksticks.

笔 (bǐ )BRUSH

In numerous pen products, the Chinese brush can be regarded as the most special one.

Traditional Chinese brush not only is the ancients’ essential tools, but also have different fascination in expressing the special charm of Chinese calligraphy and painting. We often use the rabbit hair, sheep hair and combination hair, which are the most important ones.

The rabbit hair is tough, resilient and short, it can be used to write small words. The sheep hair is soft, weak and long, it can be used to write big words.

The combination hair is made of hard hair and soft hair.

 墨 (mò)INKSTICK

The inkstick is the necessary in ancient writing. Chinese calligraphy and painting’s wonderful artistic conception can be carried out by this unique material. Before the artificial inkstick was invented, people used the naturalinkstick as the writing material. The artificial inkstick appeared in Han Dynasty and was made of pine wood.

The good inkstick is strong and tough, has black bright color and light fragrant flavor.

When we use the inkstick, we should add in clear water gradually, mill slowly and keep in the box after use.

纸 (zhǐ)PAPER

The paper was one of the four great inventions of ancient China, and it contributed to the cultural transmission a lot. Before the paper was invented, people used turtle shells and animal bones, bronze, bamboo, silk and stone as the materials to write. Paper was invented by Cai Lun in the Dynasty of Han. The rice paper has become the most valuable writing paper.

The good paper should have compact quality, pure white color and is not too rough or smooth.

When we use the paper, we should make it flat, clean and fixed.

砚(yàn) INKSTONE

The inkstone originated in Shang Dynasty. There are pottery inkstone, brick inkstone and jade inkstone. The most famous inkstone are the Duan inkstone and the She inkstone. The Duan inkstone is produced in Duan state Guangdong province. The white is best, the purple is worst. The Duan inkstone is best used to write big words. The She inkstone is as famous as the Duan inkstone, which is produced in the She state Anhui province. The She inkstone is best used to write smll words.

When we use the inkstone, we should keep water, scrub after using and mill lightly.

Xué shēng wèn lǎo shī : lǎo shī , wèi shén me fēi jī zài tiān shàng fēi ,què cóng bú huì zhuàng dào xīng xing ne ?

lǎo shī huí dá: yīn wèi xīng xing huì shǎn.

The student asks the teacher: Teacher, why the planes never run into the stars when flying in the sky?

The teacher answer: Beacuse the stars can dodge.

Explanation:

To understand this properly you need to pay attention to the word “闪 (shǎn)”.

In Chinese, 闪 means a sudden flash of light.

However, in this case it uses a different meaning: 闪避 shǎn bì = 躲避 duǒ bì = to dodge quickly.

FATHER’S DAY

OBAMA FATHER’S DAY SPEECH

VIDEO:watch?v=EMyqZ8lGgXY

Hi, everybody. Sunday is Father’s Day. If you haven’t got Dad a gift yet, there’s still time. Just barely. But the truth is, what we give our fathers can never match what our fathers give us.

dà jiā hǎo 。zhōu rì shì fù qīn jié 。rú guǒ nǐ hái méi yǒu gěi bà bà zhǔn bèi lǐ wù ,xiàn zài hái lái dé jí 。dà dà fāng fāng dì 。dàn shì shì shí shàng ,wǒ men gěi fù qīn men de yǒng yuǎn bǐ bú shàng fù qīn men gěi wǒ men de 。

I know how important it is to have a dad in your life, because I grew up without my father around. I felt the weight of his absence. So for Michelle and our girls, I try every day to be the husband and father my family didn’t have when I was young.

wǒ shēn zhī nǐ men yī shēng zhōng yǒu gè fù qīn shì hé děng zhòng yào ,yīn wéi wǒ cóng xiǎo dào dà méi yǒu fù qīn 。wǒ shēn zhī méi yǒu tā wǒ men de jiān nán 。suǒ yǐ duì mǐ qiē ěr hé wǒ men de liǎng gè nǚ ér ,wǒ měi tiān dōu nǔ lì zuò yī gè hǎo zhàng fū hé hǎo bà bà ,zhè shì wǒ zhè shí hòu jiā lǐ méi yǒu de 。

And every chance I get, I encourage fathers to get more involved in their children’s lives, because what makes you a man isn’t the ability to have a child – it’s the courage to raise one.

wǒ zǒng shì lì yòng yī qiē jī huì gǔ lì fù qīn men gèng duō dì róng rù hái zǐ men de shēng huó ,yīn wéi zhè shǐ nǐ chéng wéi yī gè bú zhǐ shì yǒu néng lì shēng hái zǐ de nán rén ,ér shì yǒu fǔ yǎng hái zǐ de yǒng qì de nán rén 。

Still, over the past couple years, I’ve met with a lot of young people who don’t have a father figure around. And while there’s nothing that can replace a parent, any of us can do our part to be a mentor, a sounding board, a role model for a kid who needs one.

hái yǒu ,zài guò qù de jǐ nián lǐ ,wǒ yù dào hěn duō méi yǒu fù qīn de nián qīng rén 。jìn guǎn méi yǒu shí me kě yǐ qǔ dài yī gè jiā zhǎng ,wǒ men zhōng de rèn hé rén dōu kě yǐ jìn zì jǐ de nǔ lì chéng wéi dǎo shī ,yī gè qīng tīng zhě hé hái zǐ xū yào de rèn hé jiǎo sè 。

Earlier this year, I launched an initiative called My Brother’s Keeper – an all-hands-on-deck effort to help more of our young men reach their full potential. And if you want to be a mentor to a young man in your community, you can find out how at WhiteHouse.gov/MyBrothersKeeper.

如果你想成为你们社区的任何一个年轻人的导师,你可以在WhiteHouse.gov/MyBrothersKeeper网站得知如何做。

jīn nián zǎo xiē shí hòu ,wǒ tuī chū le yī gè jiào zuò “dì dì de jiān hù rén ”de dòng yì –yī gè rén rén jìn zé de nǔ lì zhǐ zài bāng zhù wǒ men de nián qīng rén fā huī tā men de qián néng 。rú guǒ nǐ xiǎng chéng wéi nǐ men shè qū de rèn hé yī gè nián qīng rén de dǎo shī ,nǐ kě yǐ zài WhiteHouse.gov/MyBrothersKeeperwǎng zhàn dé zhī rú hé zuò 。

Now, when I launched this initiative, I said that government can’t play the primary role in a young person’s life. Taking responsibility for being a great parent or mentor is a choice that we, as individuals, have to make. No government program can ever take the place of a parent’s love. Still, as a country, there are ways we can help support dads and moms who make that choice.

dāng wǒ tuī chū zhè gè dòng yì de shí hòu ,wǒ shuō zhèng fǔ bú néng zài rèn hé nián qīng rén de shēng huó zhōng qǐ zhǔ dǎo zuò yòng 。dān qǐ zuò wéi wěi dà de fù mǔ huò dǎo shī de zé rèn shì wǒ men zuò wéi gè rén bì xū zuò chū de xuǎn zé 。méi yǒu yī gè zhèng fǔ xiàng mù kě yǐ qǔ dài fù mǔ de ài 。hái yǒu ,zuò wéi yī gè guó jiā ,wǒ men yǒu hěn duō fāng shì bāng zhù fù qīn men hé mǔ qīn men zuò chū zhè gè xuǎn zé 。

That’s why, earlier this week, we brought working dads from across America to the White House to talk about the challenges they face. And in a few weeks, I’ll hold the first-ever White House Working Families Summit. We’ve still got too many workplace policies that belong in the 1950s, and it’s time to bring them up to date for today’s families, where oftentimes, both parents are working.

zhè jiù shì wéi shí me běn zhōu zǎo xiē shí hòu ,wǒ men yāo qǐng le yī xiē lái zì quán měi gè dì de gōng xīn fù qīn men lái dào bái gōng tǎo lùn wǒ men miàn duì de tiāo zhàn 。zài jīn hòu jǐ zhōu lǐ ,wǒ jiāng zài bái gōng jǔ bàn bái gōng gōng xīn jiā tíng fēng huì 。wǒ men xiàn zài yǒu hěn duō zhí chǎng zhèng cè hái shì 1950nián dài de ,xiàn zài shì shǐ tā men gēn shàng jīn tiān de jiā tíng de shí hòu le ,zhè xiē jiā tíng tōng cháng shì shuāng qīn dōu gōng zuò 。

Moms and dads deserve affordable child care, and time off to care for a sick parent or child without running into hardship. Women deserve equal pay for equal work – and at a time when more women are breadwinners for a family, that benefits men, too. And because no parent who works full-time should have to raise a family in poverty, it’s time for Congress to follow the lead of state after state, get on the bandwagon, and give America a raise.

mǔ qīn men hé fù qīn men lǐ yīng dé dào kě chéng shòu de ér bǎo ,kě yǐ qǐng jiǎ zhào gù shēng bìng de fù mǔ huò hái zǐ ér bú zhì yú xiàn rù kùn jìng 。fù nǚ lǐ yīng dé dào tóng gōng tóng chóu dài yù –dāng gèng duō fù nǚ chéng wéi jiā tíng zhī zhù shí ,nán rén yě cóng zhōng shòu yì 。yīn wéi wǒ men bú yǔn xǔ rèn hé quán zhí fù mǔ zhī chēng yī gè jiā tíng jiù yào xiàn rù pín kùn ,suǒ yǐ xiàn zài shì guó huì jǐn gēn yī gè yòu yī gè zhōu de cháo liú ,gěi měi guó yī gè tí shēng 。

Dads work hard. So our country should do what we can to make sure their hard work pays off; to make sure life for them and their families is a little less stressful, and a little more secure, so they can be the dads their kids need them to be.

fù qīn men qín fèn gōng zuò 。suǒ yǐ wǒ men de guó jiā yīng gāi jìn lì ràng tā men de nǔ lì dé dào huí bào ;què bǎo tā men hé tā men de jiā tíng de shēng huó gèng jiā chéng gōng yī diǎn ,gèng jiā ān quán yī diǎn ,yǐ shǐ tā men chéng wéi tā men de hái zǐ men xiǎng yào de fù qīn men 。

Because there’s nothing more precious in life than the time we spend with our children. There’s no better feeling than knowing that we can be there for them, and provide for them, and help give them every shot at success.

Let’s make sure every dad who works hard and takes responsibility has the chance to know that feeling, not just on one Sunday, but every day of the year.

Thanks everybody, happy Father’s Day, and have a great weekend.
