Mandarin course hong kong – I love you

 Mandarin Lesson

“I love you”

“I love you” might be one of the most important combinations of three words in the English language. It’s the signal that a romantic relationship is serious, an indication of closeness for a sibling, parent, or child, and a constant refrain for pop songs.

In Mandarin, “I love you” translates as “我爱你” (Wo ai ni), but the way it’s used in China might be a little different, and Chinese state media is wondering why.

The Global Times reports that two online videos showing children telling their parents “I love you” have gone viral in China. The first, filmed by an Anhui TV station, shows a number of college students telling their parents they love them. The response are mixed. “Are you drunk?” asked one parent. In another similar video, shot by a Shanxi TV station, a father responded even more bluntly — “I am going to a meeting, so cut the crap.”

Even the positive reactions make it clear that the words are expressed rarely: “I am so happy you called to say that, it is the happiest thing that happened to me in 2014,” one parent answered.

Why don’t Chinese families use those words? Theories revolve around the nature of Confucian teaching. “The parents’ responses show that many Chinese are not good at expressing positive emotions,” Xia Xueluan, a Sociologist from Peking University, told the Global Times. “They are used to educating children with negative language.”

This isn’t the first time that China has done some soul-searching about familial love — last year China Daily asked a cross-section of people if they said ‘I love you’ to their parents, spouses, and children. “I have never said ‘I love you’ to my family, and I don’t think I will in the future,” one 56-year-old told the paper. “Saying it aloud is embarrassing for me.”

First Lady’s fashion show

Invited by China`s First Lady Peng Liyuan, US First Lady Michelle Obama is visiting China with her daughters this week. The two ladies will definitely attract attention in terms of fashion. Peng turned the world onto Chinese designer Ma Ke and the label Exception de Mixmind, while Mrs. Obama has made famous the American designer Jason Wu, along with Michael Kors and Ralph Lauren. Before their styles meet, let us review some of the attractive moments the two First Ladies have had under the public eye.
Michelle Obama wore a Thom Browne design to the US Presidential Inauguration. The Fist Lady arrived at St. John`s Church in Washington DC, wearing a checked-pattern overcoat. Her dark pink gloves were also highlights of her outfit.
Peng, who accompanied her husband President Xi Jingping on his first state visit to Russia, wore a navy blue coat from designer Ma Ke. Her overcoat, together with the square black handbag, was very elegant. Her look`s highlight was in her light-blue scarf, adding a light style to her classic look.

learn mandarin hong kong – Beauty is essentially a form of energy

Mandarin Lesson

Beauty is essentially a form of energy

Beauty is essentially a form of energy, something that radiates from a fine example of absolutely anything, whether a delightful taste or smell, or a gorgeous sight. This energy is in effect a form of information, nature’s bar code telling us how healthy that attitude is, because health-bringing things increase the likelihood that we and our genes will survive.
Harvard phychologist Nancy Etcoff observes that, with this vital equation very much in mind, our brains behave like a highly sensitive radar constantly hunting a signal. If we’re shown the photograph of a face, it takes us less than a fifth of a second to make a judgement of its beauty.
Much of the language of this energy is hard-wired and universal. Even three month-old babies have been shown to prefer gazing at conventionally beautiful faces, and adults from diverse ethnic cultures can all agree on who is exactly how good-looking in other populations.
Experimental studies have also established that the active ingredients include symmetry, order, proportion and balance. Since beauty is so powerful and important, we can be thankful that there are many ways to be beautiful, and very many sources. And though we most readily think of experiencing that energy through our five physical senses of sight, sound, taste, touch and smell, other dimensions are even more potent. For example, there is movement-which can be the internal, kinaesthetic sense of our own bodies in dance or sport; or the thrill of seeing an art or craft well performed. Consider, too, how ideas, insights, and solutions, can be deemed beautiful. Among scientists, Einstein’s Theory of Relativity is unanimously praised for its extraordinary beauty.
Yale’s David Gelernter, a professor of computer science, has argued convincingly that “lust for beauty” has driven the great technological discoveries. It is no accient, he would claim, that Mitchell’s Spitfire, with its Merlin engines and distinctive wings, could help win a war while also seeming wonderful to the eye and ear.And just as the plan for a bank robbery, a bridge, or a computer program can all work beautifully, so can a whole personality. We know from the studies of many lifetimes that humans find a balance of loving and confidence and kindness and humour to be highly attractive and very healthy qualities.
Yet, the greatest source of beauty, for the sheer intensity and volume of positive emotion it brings to our lives, is the beautiful relationship–the one in which we can thrive and flourish and grow beyond ourselves. This fertile bond can exist between two living things, or a person and a place, or a person and a skill, and the world becomes only more beautiful the more deeply we understand it. Therefore, we will find profound happiness in narturing and appreciating diverse beauties in whatever ways we can.

Chinese language study HK – Aircraft lost contact

Mandarin Lesson

Aircraft lost contact

Traditionally regarded as one of the safest planes in the skies, the Boeing 777’s reputation will have been damaged by the second fatal crash in less than a year.
There are around 1,000 Boeing 777s in service, and the plane is a long haul workhorse, plying some of the longest routes.
It entered service in 1995 and the National Transportation Safety Board, which is responsible for monitoring US-made aircraft, has logged fewer than 60 incidents.
But the recent record has been more patchy with two major incidents – a crash at San Francisco airport last July, which claimed three lives, and the crash-landing of a British Airways 777 at Heathrow in January 2008.
But the Malaysian disaster is very different from both the BA incident and the crash involving a Asiana Airlines flight at San Francisco International Airport in July.
Both the BA and Asiana accidents occurred shortly before landing, while the Malaysia airlines plane disappeared off the radar during the early stages of the trip.

Korean dramas influence

My Love from the Star has such an intense following, it’s got its fans acting crazy. The show debuted on December 18, 2013 and had an average viewership of 24% in Korea. It then sold to China where it’s been viewed online through iQiyi, a Chinese video streaming platform, alone 14.5 billion times.
The premise is catchy: An alien lands 400 years ago in Korea and falls in love. Fast forward to present, he meets his first love’s doppelgänger — a haughty starlet, and inevitably falls in love with her too.
The show has sparked all sorts of trends, namely one for chicken and beer as it’s the heroine’s favorite food combination.
Resulting in over 3.7 million posts on China’s microblogging platform about “chicken and beer” in the weeks following the episode’s airing.
Another story reported that a 50-year-old Chinese woman suffered a heart attack from late night binge-watching and getting too “emotional” over the storyline.
When Chinese officials met in Beijing this week, the show was the hottest topic of discussion. They debated why China hasn’t made a show nearly as popular.
The CPPCC National Committee even went so far as to deem that the fanaticism sparked by My Love from the Star has hurt the self-respect of Chinese culture.
