Noticing your age–getting older

When do you feel like you are getting older?

Is it when the songs you liked when you were young are now considered all this but good east to the next generation?

When I was younger, I rarely liked classic music or jazz.

Now I do. Does that mean that I’m getting older?

Have you noticed that an actor or an actress that you’ve liked for a long time is getting a lot of wrinkles or gray hair?

Do you notice your age when you are with others like at a reunion of some kind?

Do you notice your age when you are looking in the mirror?

Does that scare you?

Do you find that the kind of clothes you like are thought of the clothes for a mature person?

I respect people that age gracefully.

It seems like that many people fear getting older.

They don’t want the wrinkles to show.

I have to confess I have a few gray hairs.

Oh,  NO! Even though the body may get old,

I think people can be young at heart.

My father fits right in when he plays with his grandkids.

It’s not awkward at all.

He comes up with the best games.

He may not be able to jump on the bedlam as the kids do,

but he can wrestle and dance and go for walks and play catch.

His mind is deep and his heart is warm.

I hope I age gracefully like dad.

寧為玉碎,不為瓦全

   “寧為玉碎,不為瓦全”這則成語的意思是寧可做玉器被打碎,不願做陶器完整保全。比喻寧願保持高尚的氣節死去,而不願屈辱地活著。

 這個成語來源於《北齊書.元景安傳》,大丈夫寧可玉碎,不能瓦全。

公元550年,北朝東魏的孝靜帝被迫將帝位讓給專橫不可一世的丞相高洋。從此,北齊代替了東魏。高洋心狠手辣,次年又毒死了孝靜帝及其三個兒子,來個斬草除根。

  高洋當皇帝第10年6月的一天,出現了日食。他擔心這是一個不祥之兆:自己篡奪的皇位快保不住了。於是,把一個親信召來問道:“西漢末年王莽奪了劉家的天下,為什麼後來光武帝劉秀又能把天下奪回來?”

  那親信說不清這是什麼道理,隨便回答說:“陛下,這要怪王莽自己了。因為他沒有把劉氏宗室人員斬盡殺絕。”

  殘忍的高洋竟相信了那親信的話,馬上又開了殺戒:把東魏宗室近親44家共700多人全部處死,連嬰兒也無一倖免。

  消息傳開後,東魏宗室的遠房宗族也非常恐慌,生怕什麼時候高洋的屠刀會砍到他們頭上。他們趕緊聚集起來商量對策。有個名叫元景安的縣令說,眼下要保命的唯一辦法,是請求高洋准許他們脫離元氏,改姓高氏。

  元景安的堂兄景皓,堅決反對這種做法。他氣憤地說:“怎麼能用拋棄本宗、改為他姓的辦法來保命呢?大丈夫寧可做玉器被打碎,不願做陶器得保全。我寧願死而保持氣節,不願為了活命而忍受屈辱!”

  元景安為了保全自已的性命,卑鄙地把景皓的話報告了高洋。高洋立即逮捕了景皓,並將他處死。元景安因告密有功,高洋賜他姓高,並且升了官。

  但是,殘酷的屠殺不能挽救北齊搖搖欲墜的政權。三個月後,高洋因病死去。再過18年,北齊王朝也壽終正寢了。

Níng wéi yùsuì, bù wéi wǎquán

“Níng wéi yùsuì, bù wéi wǎquán” zhè zé chéngyǔ de yìsi shì nìngkě zuò yùqì bèi dǎ suì, bù yuàn zuò táoqì wánzhěng bǎoquán. Bǐyù nìngyuàn bǎochí gāoshàng de qìjié sǐqù, ér bù yuàn qūrǔ de huózhe. Zhège chéngyǔ láiyuán yú “běiqí shū. Yuán jǐng ān chuán”, dàzhàngfū nìngkě yùsuì, bùnéng wǎquán. Gōngyuán 550 nián, běicháo dōngwèi de xiào jìngdì bèi pò jiāng dìwèi ràng gěi zhuānhèng bù kè yīshì de chéngxiàng gāoyáng. Cóngcǐ, běiqí dàitìle dōngwèi. Gāoyáng xīnhěnshǒulà, cì nián yòu dú sǐle xiào jìngdì jí qí sān gè er zi, lái gè zhǎncǎochúgēn. Gāoyáng dāng huángdì dì 10 nián 6 yuè de yītiān, chūxiànle rì shí. Tā dānxīn zhè shì yīgè bùxiáng zhī zhào: Zìjǐ cuànduó de huángwèi kuài bǎobuzhùle. Yúshì, bǎ yīgè qīnxìn zhào lái wèn dào:“Xīhàn mònián wángmǎng duóle liú jiā de tiānxià, wèishéme hòulái guāng wǔdì liú xiù yòu néng bǎ tiānxià duó huílái?” Nà qīnxìn shuō bu qīng zhè shì shénme dàolǐ, suíbiàn huídá shuō:“Bìxià, zhè yào guài wángmǎng zìjǐle. Yīnwèi tā méiyǒu bǎ liú shì zōngshì rényuán zhǎn jìn shā jué.” Cánrěn de gāoyáng jìng xiāngxìnle nà qīnxìn dehuà, mǎshàng yòu kāile shājiè: Bǎ dōngwèi zōngshì jìnqīn 44 jiā gòng 700 duō rén quánbù chǔsǐ, lián yīng’ér yě wú yī xìngmiǎn. Xiāoxi chuán kāi hòu, dōngwèi zōngshì de yuǎnfáng zōngzú yě fēicháng kǒnghuāng, shēngpà shénme shíhou gāoyáng de túdāo huì kǎn dào tāmen tóu shàng. Tāmen gǎnjǐn jùjí qǐlái shāngliáng duìcè. Yǒu gè míng jiào yuán jǐng ān dì xiàn lìng shuō, yǎnxià yào bǎomìng de wéiyī bànfǎ, shì qǐngqiú gāoyáng zhǔnxǔ tāmen tuōlí yuán shì, gǎixìng gāo shì. Yuán jǐng ān dì táng xiōng jǐng hào, jiānjué fǎnduì zhè zhǒng zuòfǎ. Tā qìfèn dì shuō:“Zěnme néng yòng pāoqì běn zōng, gǎi wèi tā xìng de bànfǎ lái bǎomìng ne? Dàzhàngfū nìngkě zuò yùqì bèi dǎ suì, bù yuàn zuò táoqì dé bǎoquán. Wǒ nìngyuàn sǐ ér bǎochí qìjié, bù yuàn wéi le huómìng ér Rěnshòu qūrǔ!” Yuán jǐng ān wèile bǎoquán zìyǐ dì xìngmìng, bēibǐ de bǎ jǐng hào dehuà bàogàole gāoyáng. Gāoyáng lìjí dàibǔle jǐng hào, bìng jiāng tā chǔsǐ. Yuán jǐng ān yīn gàomì yǒugōng, gāoyáng cì tā xìng gāo, bìngqiě shēngle guān. Dànshì, cánkù de túshā bùnéng wǎnjiù běiqí yáoyáoyùzhuì de zhèngquán. Sān gè yuè hòu, gāoyáng yīn bìng sǐqù. Zàiguò 18 nián, běiqí wángcháo yě shòuzhōngzhèngqǐnle.

A blind boy sat on the steps of a building with a hat by his feet. He held up a sign which said: “I am blind, please help.” There were only a few coins in the hat.

A man was walking by. He took a few coins from his pocket and dropped them into the hat. He then took the sign, turned it around, and wrote some words. He put the sign back so that everyone who walked by would see the new words.

Soon the hat began to fill up. A lot more people were giving money to the blind boy. That afternoon the man who had changed the sign came to see how things were. The boy recognized his footsteps and asked,” Were you the one who changed my sign this morning? What did you write?”

The man said, “I only wrote the truth. I said what you said, but in a different way. I wrote: ‘Today is a beautiful day, but I cannot see it.'”

Both signs told people that the boy was blind. But the first sign simply said the boy was blind. The second sign told people that they were so lucky that they were not blind. Should we be surprised that the second sign was more effective?

一個雙目失明的男孩坐在大樓前的台階上,腳邊擺著一頂帽子。他立了一塊牌子,上面寫著:“我是瞎子,請幫助我。”那帽子裡只有寥寥幾枚硬幣。

一個路人從旁邊走過,他從口袋裡拿出幾枚硬幣,放在帽子裡。然後,他拿起牌子,翻到另一面寫了些字。隨後他把牌子放回去,讓所有路過的人都能看見牌子上新寫的字。

很快,帽子裡的錢就多起來了。越來越多的人把錢給這個失明的孩子。下午,改寫牌子的人回來看看情況,男孩聽出了他的腳步聲,問道:“您是早上幫我改寫牌子的人麼?您寫了什麼?”

那人說:“我只是寫出了事實。我表達的意思和你一樣,只是用了另一種方式。我寫的是:’今天是美好的一天,而我卻無法看見。’”

兩個牌子都告訴人們男孩是盲人,但第一個牌子只是簡單地講述了這一事實;而第二個牌子卻告訴人們,他們是如此幸運,因為他們不是盲人。所以說,第二個牌子效果更佳,並沒有什麼好驚訝的不是嗎?

Yīgè shuāng mù shīmíng de nánhái zuò zài dàlóu qián de táijiē shàng, jiǎo biān bǎizhe yī dǐng màozi. Nín xiěle shénme?” Nà rén shuō:“Wǒ zhǐshì xiě chū liǎo shìshí. Wǒ biǎodá de yìsi hé nǐ yīyàng, zhǐshì yòngle lìng yī zhǒng fāngshì. Wǒ xiě de shì:’Jīntiān shì měihǎo de yītiān, ér wǒ què wúfǎ kànjiàn.’” Liǎng gè páizi dōu gào sù rénmen nánhái shì mángrén, dàn dì yī gè páizi zhǐshì jiǎndān de jiǎngshùle zhè yī shìshí; ér dì èr gè páizi què gào sù rénmen, tāmen shì rúcǐ xìngyùn, yīnwèi tāmen bùshì mángrén. Suǒyǐ shuō, dì èr gè páizi xiàoguǒ gèng jiā, bìng méiyǒu shé me hǎo jīngyà de bùshì ma?

這個典故出自《戰國策.趙策三》。秦國和趙國在長平(今山西)交戰,趙沒有取勝,還死了一個都尉。趙孝成王(趙丹)把大將樓昌和大夫虞卿找來商量對策。趙王說:”現在軍隊作戰沒有取勝,都尉又陣亡了,我想拿出全部的力量去和秦軍再拼一下,你們看如何?”樓昌搶先說:”這沒用,不如派高級使臣去求和。”虞卿說:”主張講和的人,以為不求和軍隊一定會被打敗。但是和不和,控制權掌握在秦國人手裡,大王請你分析一下,秦國是否想打敗趙國的軍隊呢?”趙王說:”秦國這次侵犯我們,已經是不遺餘力了,看來一定是想要打敗我們的軍隊。”虞卿勸諫:”請你聽從我的意見,派出使者帶著貴重珍寶去聯合楚國和魏國,楚國和魏國想要得到大王的珍寶,一定會接待我們的使者,這樣派去的人和楚、魏聯繫上了,秦國一定會懷疑天下將要”合縱”而且必定害怕,這時再求和就可以了。”趙王沒有採納虞卿的意見,和平陽君趙豹商議後決定求和,派信使鄭朱去秦國,秦國接待了他。趙王召來虞卿說:”我派平陽君向秦國求和,秦國已接待了先去的使者鄭朱,你認為如何?”虞卿回答:”大王不可能講成和,趙國軍隊一定會被消滅掉。天下慶賀作戰取勝的人都要在秦國了,鄭朱是我國的名人,他到了秦國,秦昭襄王和相國范睢肯定會張揚求和的這件事,以便叫天下人都知道。楚國和魏國認為趙國已經和秦國求和了,一定不會來援救大王,秦國知道楚、魏等各國不來援救趙國,那麼求和的事就講不成了。”後來趙國終究沒能和秦國實現求和,軍隊果真被消滅了。

 

現通常用此典故說明在做某件事情,作了最大努力,拿出了全部力量。

Zhège diǎngù chūzì “zhànguó cè. Zhàocèsān”. Qín guó hé zhào guó zài zhǎng píng (jīn shānxī) jiāozhàn, zhào méiyǒu qǔshèng, hái sǐle yīgè dū wèi. Zhào xiàochéng wáng (zhào dān) bǎ dàjiàng lóu chānghé dàfū yú qīng zhǎo lái shāngliáng duìcè. Zhào wáng shuō:”Xiànzài jūnduì zuòzhàn méiyǒu qǔshèng, dū wèi yòu zhènwángle, wǒ xiǎng ná chū quánbù de lìliàng qù hé qín jūn zài pīn yīxià, nǐmen kàn rúhé?”Lóu chāng qiǎngxiān shuō:”Zhè méi yòng, bùrú pài gāojí Shǐ chén qù qiú hé.”Yú qīng shuō:”Zhǔzhāng jiǎng hé de rén, yǐwéi bù qiú hé jūnduì yīdìng huì bèi dǎbài. Dànshì hé bù hé, kòngzhì quán zhǎngwò zài qín guó rénshǒu lǐ, dàwáng qǐng nǐ fēnxī yīxià, qín guó Shìfǒu xiǎng dǎbài zhào guó de jūnduì ne?”Zhào wáng shuō:”Qín guó zhè cì qīnfàn wǒmen, yǐjīng shì bùyíyúlìle, kàn lái yīdìng shì xiǎng yào dǎbài wǒmen de jūnduì.”Yú qīng quàn jiàn:”Qǐng nǐ tīngcóng wǒ de Yìjiàn, pàichū shǐzhě dàizhe guìzhòng zhēnbǎo qù liánhé chu guó hé wèi guó, chu guó hé wèi guó xiǎng yào dédào dàwáng de zhēnbǎo, yīdìng huì jiēdài wǒmen de shǐzhě, zhèyàng pài qù de rén hé chu, wèi liánxì shàngle, qín guó Yīdìng huì huáiyí tiānxià jiāngyào”hé zòng”érqiě bìdìng hàipà, zhè shí zài qiú hé jiù kěyǐle.”Zhào wáng méiyǒu cǎinà yú qīng de yìjiàn, hé píngyáng jūn zhào bào shāngyì hòu juédìng qiú hé, pài xìnshǐ zhèng zhū qù qín guó , Qín guó jiēdàile tā. Zhào wángzhàolái yú qīng shuō:”Wǒ pài píngyáng jūn xiàng qínguóqiú hé, qín guó yǐ jiēdàile xiān qù de shǐzhě zhèng zhū, nǐ rènwéi rúhé?”Yú qīng huídá:”Dàwáng bù kěnéng jiǎng chéng hé, zhào guó jūnduì yīdìng huì bèi Xiāomiè diào. Tiānxià qìnghè zuòzhàn qǔshèng de rén dōu yào zài qín guóle, zhèng zhū shì wǒguó de míngrén, tā dàole qín guó, qínzhāoxiāng wáng hé xiāngguó fàn suī kěndìng huì zhāngyáng qiú hé de zhè jiàn shì, yǐbiàn jiào tiānxià rén dōu zhīdào . Happiness is a journey

We always convince ourselves that life will be better after we get married, have a baby, than another. Then we are frustrated that the kids aren’t old enough and we’ll be more content when they are. After that we’re frustrated that we have teenagers to deal with. We will certainly be happy when they are out of that stage.

We always tell ourselves that our life will be complete when our spouse gets his or her act together. When we get a nice car, and are able to go on a nice vocation when we retire. The truth is, there’s no better time than right now. If not now, when? Our life will always be filled with challenges. It’s best to admit this to ourselves and decide to be happy anyway.

 

幸福是個過程

我們總是說服自己,認為當我們結婚、生子後日子會過的更加舒心些。然後我們又被那些小鬼的不懂事搞得不順心,當他們大了些後,情況會好些吧。當孩子到了青春期的時候,(有時)對於如何跟他們好好交流又會使我們很無措。我們都深信當他們過了那個年齡段後,事情就會有些轉機。

我們總是對自己說,當另一半有條理的過活時,(我們的)人生就會很圓滿。當我們買了一台漂亮的車子後,我們認為可以在年老退休後開去度假。可事實上,再也沒有比當下更好的時間段了,要不是現在這時,那麼還能是什麼時候呢?我們的人生滿是各種神奇的未知數。不管怎麼說,對你我而言,最好是承認活在當下里的意義然後及時“自己給自己找樂”。

Xìngfú shìgè guòchéng

Wǒmen zǒng shì shuōfú zìjǐ, rènwéi dāng wǒmen jiéhūn, shēngzǐ hòu rìzi huìguò de gèngjiā shūxīn xiē. Ránhòu wǒmen yòu bèi nàxiē xiǎoguǐ de bù dǒngshì gǎo dé bù shùnxīn, dāng tāmen dàle xiē hòu, qíngkuàng huì hǎoxiē ba. Dāng háizi dàole qīngchūnqí de shíhou,(yǒushí) duìyú rúhé gēn tāmen hǎohǎo jiāoliú yòu huì shǐ wǒmen hěn wú cuò. Wǒmen dōu shēnxìn dāng tāmenguòle nàgè niánlíng duàn hòu, shìqíng jiù huì yǒuxiē zhuǎnjī. Wǒmen zǒng shì duì zìjǐ shuō, dāng lìng yībàn yǒu tiáolǐ de guòhuó shí,(wǒmen de) rénshēng jiù huì hěn yuánmǎn. Dāng wǒmen mǎile yī tái piàoliang de jū zi hòu, wǒmen rènwéi kěyǐ zài nián lǎo tuìxiū hòu kāi qù dùjià. Kě shìshí shàng, zài yě méiyǒu bǐ dāngxià gèng hǎo de shíjiān duànle, yào bùshì xiànzài zhè shí, nàme hái néng shì shénme shíhou ne? Wǒmen de rénshēng mǎn shì gè zhǒng shénqí de wèizhīshù. Bùguǎn zěnme shuō, duì nǐ wǒ ér yán, zuì hǎo shì chéngrèn huó zài dāngxià lǐ de yìyì ránhòu jíshí “zìjǐ jǐ zìjǐ zhǎo lè”.

   晉武帝咸寧三年(公元227年)八月,晉武帝司馬炎封司馬懿的第九子瑯琊王司馬倫為趙王,督鄴城(在今臨漳縣西)守事。趙王司馬倫到任後,濫封官爵,只要是王親宦戚、親信部屬,即便是“奴卒役廝,亦加爵位”。因此,“每朝會,貂蟬盈座”,殿上擠得滿滿的盡是“大官”(古時大官的官帽上,有蟬形圖案的金鐺為裝飾,並插上貂尾,稱為“貂蟬冠”)。當時老百姓看不慣這股腐敗之風,編歌謠諷刺道:“貂不足,狗尾續。”貂尾是珍貴的皮毛,大官太多,貂尾不夠用了,就用狗尾巴代替吧。

   此後,人們形容官爵太濫,於是叫做“狗尾續貂”;前美後醜,兩者極不相稱,也叫做“狗尾續貂”。例如,在別人的好文章後面胡亂添寫一段,或是給別人未完成的佳作代為續成,而續得併不高明,便可用這句成語作比喻。

Dāngshí lǎobǎixìng kàn bù guàn zhè gǔ fǔbài zhī fēng, biān gēyáo fèngcì dào:“Diāo bùzú, gǒu wěi xù.” Diāo wěi shì zhēnguì de pímáo, dà guān tài duō, diāo wěi bùgòu yòngle, jiù yòng gǒu wěiba dàitì ba. Cǐhòu, rénmen xíngróng guānjué tài làn, yúshì jiàozuò “gǒuwěixùdiāo”; qián měi hòu chǒu, liǎng zhě jí bù xiāngchèn, yě jiàozuò “gǒuwěixùdiāo”. Lìrú, zài biérén de hǎo wénzhāng hòumiàn húluàn tiān xiě yīduàn, huò shì gěi biérén wèi wánchéng de jiāzuò dàiwéi xù chéng, ér xù de bìng bù gāomíng, biàn kěyòng zhè jù chéngyǔ zuò bǐyù.

傳說天上管理馬匹的神仙叫伯樂。在人間,人們把精於鑑別馬匹優劣的人也稱為伯樂。第一個被稱作伯樂的人本名孫陽,他是春秋時代的人。由於他對馬的研究非常出色,人們便忘記了他本來的名字,乾脆稱他為伯樂,一直到現在。

一次,伯樂受楚王的委託,購買能日行千里的駿馬。伯樂向楚王說明,千里馬少有,找起來不容易,需要到各地巡訪,請楚王不必著急,他盡力將事情辦好。

伯樂跑了好幾個國家,仔細尋訪盛產名馬的燕趙一帶,辛苦倍至,但還是沒發現中意的良馬。一天,伯樂從齊國返回,在路上,看到一匹馬拉著鹽車,很吃力地在陡坡上行進。馬累得呼呼喘氣,每邁一步都十分艱難。伯樂對馬向來親近,不由走到跟前。馬見伯樂走近,突然昂起頭來瞪大眼睛,大聲嘶鳴,好像要對伯樂傾訴什麼。伯樂立刻從聲音中判斷出,這是一匹難得的駿馬。

Truly happy and successful people

Truly happy and successful people get that way by becoming the best, most genuine version of themselves they can be. Not on the outside–on the inside. It’s not about a brand, a reputation, a persona. It’s about reality. Who you really are.

Sounds simple, I know. It is a simple concept. The problem is, it’s very hard to do, it takes a lot of work, and it can take a lifetime to figure it out.

Nothing worth doing in life is ever easy. If you want to do great work, it’s going to take a lot of hard work to do it. And you’re going to have to break out of your comfort zone and take some chances that will scare the crap out of you.

But you know, I can’t think of a better way to spend your life. I mean, what’s life for if not finding yourself and trying to become the best, most genuine version of you that you can be?

That’s what Steve Jobs meant when he said this at a Stanford University commencement speech:

Your time is limited, so don’t waste it living someone else’s life. Don’t let the noise of others’ opinions drown out your own inner voice.

You have to trust that the dots will somehow connect in your future. You have to trust in something–your gut, destiny, life, karma, whatever. This approach has never let me down, and it has made all the difference in my life.

The only way to do great work is to love what you do. If you haven’t found it yet, keep looking. Don’t settle.

真正快樂成功的人會長成最好最真實的自己——從內心而非外表上。重要的不是品牌、名譽或者外表形象,而是真實的自我。

道理很簡單,講出來也很容易。但問題是,做起來就不簡單了:這需要付諸很多努力,甚或一輩子才能實現。

需要窮盡畢生精力的事情必定不容易。成大事者必先苦其心志。因此,你必須走出舒適區,去經歷、去體驗那些會讓你害怕的機會。

況且,人這一輩子,若到頭來都認不清自己、未能長成最好最真實的自己,還有什麼意義呢?

正如史蒂夫-喬布斯在斯坦福大學的畢業典禮上所言:

時間寶貴,不要虛擲光陰過著他人的生活。不要讓周遭的聒噪言論蒙蔽你內心的聲音。

你要相信,生活中的偶然冥冥中也能指引未來。你要心懷信念——相信你的直覺、命運、生活抑或因緣。這個方法一直給我力量,促使我過得卓然不同。

成大事的唯一途徑就是做自己喜歡的事情。若你還沒找到,那就繼續追尋吧,不要停下來。
