生吞活剝

唐高宗時期,有一個地方的縣尉張懷慶,附庸風雅,喜歡詩文創作,但他文筆不是很好,為了出名,就經常把別人的作品改頭換面地抄襲過來,冒充自己的作品。

當時,有個詩人名叫李義府,他寫了這樣一首五言詩:“鏤月為歌扇,裁云作舞衣。自憐回雪影,好取洛川歸。”張懷慶看見以後,就馬上把它拿來,在每句前面加上兩個字,改成了一首根本不通的七言詩:“生情鏤月為歌扇,出性裁云作舞衣。照鑑自憐回雪影,來時好取洛川歸。”人們讀了張懷慶的這首詩,無不嘩然大笑。

那時,朝中有兩個官居高位的大詩人,一個是張昌齡,一個是郭正一。他們兩人的作品常常遭到張懷慶的剽竊篡改。因為張懷慶有不懂裝懂、剽竊抄襲、隨便改動別人作品來冒充自己創作的惡劣習慣,並且常常剽竊張昌齡和郭正一的作品,所以當時的人們就給他編了兩句順口溜:“活剝張昌齡,生吞郭正一。”

成語“生吞活剝”就是由“活剝張昌齡,生吞郭正一”簡化演變來的。人們常用它來比喻生硬地抄襲或模仿別人的言論和文章,也指原樣照搬別人的工作經驗。

Tánggāozōng shíqí, yǒu yīgè dìfāng de xiàn wèi zhānghuáiqìng, fùyōngfēngyǎ, xǐhuan shīwén chuàngzuò, dàn tā wénbǐ bùshì hěn hǎo, wèile chūmíng, jiù jīngcháng bǎ biérén de zuòpǐn gǎitóuhuànmiàn de chāoxí guòlái, màochōng zìjǐ de zuòpǐn. Dāngshí, yǒu gè shīrén míng jiào liyìfǔ, tā xiěle zhèyàng yī shǒu wǔyánshī:“Lòu yuè wèi gē shàn, cái yún zuò wǔ yī. Zì lián huí xuě yǐng, hǎo qǔ luò chuān guī.” Zhānghuáiqìng kànjiàn yǐhòu, jiù mǎshàng bǎ Tā ná lái, zài měi jù qiánmiàn jiā shàng liǎng gè zì, gǎi chéngle yī shǒu gēnběn bùtōng de qīyánshī:“Shēng qíng lòu yuè wèi gē shàn, chū xìng cái yún zuò wǔ yī. Zhào jiàn zì lián huí xuě yǐng, lái Shí hǎo qǔ luò chuān guī.” Rénmen dúle zhānghuáiqìng de zhèshǒu shī, wú bù huárán dà xiào. Nà shí, cháo zhōng yǒu liǎng gè guān jū gāowèi de dà shīrén, yīgè shì zhāngchānglíng, yīgè shì guō zhèng yī. Tāmen liǎng rén de zuòpǐn chángcháng zāo dào zhānghuáiqìng de piāoqiè cuàngǎi. Yīnwèi zhānghuáiqìng yǒu bù dǒng zhuāng dǒng, piāoqiè chāoxí, suíbiàn gǎidòng biérén zuòpǐn lái màochōng zìjǐ chuàngzuò de èliè xíguàn, bìngqiě chángcháng piāoqiè zhāngchānglíng hé guō zhèng yī de zuòpǐn, suǒyǐ dāngshí de rénmen jiù gěi tā biānle liǎng jù shùnkǒuliū:“Huó bō Zhāngchānglíng, shēng tūn guō zhèng yī.” Chéngyǔ “shēngtūnhuóbō” jiùshì yóu “huó bō zhāngchānglíng, shēng tūn guō zhèng yī” jiǎnhuà yǎnbiàn lái de. Rénmen chángyòng tā lái bǐyù shēngyìng dì chāoxí huò mófǎng biérén de yánlùn hé wénzhāng, yě zhǐ yuányàng zhàobān biérén de gōngzuò jīngyàn.

My battery commander and I were interviewing candidates for a position as reconnaissance sergeant in our artillery unit. The selected soldier needed to have keen eyesight, plus the ability to react quickly. During one interview, the commander pointed to a hill about a mile away and asked a young sergeant, “Can you see that hill over there?”

“Yes, sir.” he replied.

“Can you see the radio antenna on that hill?” Again, the soldier said that he could. “Well, then,” the commander went on, “Can you see that bird sitting on the antenna?”

The sergeant leaned forward and squinted. “No, sir,” he said, “but I can hear it is singing.”

He got the job.

Wǒ hé lián zhǎng zài miànshì wǒmen pàobīng bùduì zhēnchá zhōng shì yī zhí de hòuxuǎn rén. Bèi xuǎn dí shìbīng yāoqiú yǒu mǐnruì de guānchá lì jí kuàisù de fǎnyìng lì. Zài yīcì miànshì shí, lián zhǎng zhǐzhe yī yīnglǐ wài de yīzuò xiǎoshān wèn yī míng niánqīng de zhōng shì:“Nǐ néng kànjiàn nà zuò shān ma?” “Shì de, zhǎngguān.” Tā huídá dào. “Nǐ néng kànjiàn nà zuò shānshàng de wúxiàndiàn tiānxiàn ma?” Nà shìbīng yòu shuō tā néng. “Nàme,” lián zhǎng jiēzhe shuō:“Nǐ néng kànjiàn tíng zài tiānxiàn shàng dì nà zhǐ niǎo ma?” Nà míng zhōng shì shēntǐ qián qīng, yǎnjīng mī chéng yītiáo fèng. “Kàn bùjiàn, zhǎngguān,” tā shuō,“dàn wǒ tīngjiàn tā zài chànggē.” Tā dédàole nà fèn gōngzuò.

太史慈是三國時期吳國的著名將領,他年輕的時候就武藝高強,很有心計,遠近聞名。當時大名士北海相孔融聽說了太史慈這個年輕人,對他非常欣賞,認定他是難得的奇才,很想與他結交,於是便多次派人去看望他的母親,並向他的母親贈送了豐厚的禮物。這讓太史慈的母親非常感動。

當時還是東漢末年,黃巾起義風起雲湧,孔融為防侵擾,出兵屯駐都昌這個地方,結果被黃巾軍管亥包圍,情勢十分危急。正好太史慈由遼東回家,母親便命他去救助孔融。她說:“你和孔融並不認識,但是他在你走後,派人非常周到地照顧我的生活。今天他被敵軍圍困,你應該趕緊去救他啊!”

太史慈趕到都昌城下,趁夜間找機會進入城內,拜見孔融。孔融便派太史慈去找劉備搬救兵。太史慈來到平原,對劉備說:“我與孔融非親非故,但都是講道德仁義的人。今管亥暴亂,孔融被圍,危在旦夕。您有仁義之名,能救人之急。因此孔融讓我冒著生命危險突出重圍向您求救。”劉備聞言,恭敬地回答:“孔融知道這人世間有我劉備這個人嗎?太看得起我了。”劉備於是立即調遣精兵三千跟隨太史慈馳救都昌,黃巾軍聽說有救兵前來,便四散而去。

成語“危在旦夕”本意是指危險就在早晚之間;後來人們常用它來形容危險就在眼前,情況十分緊急。旦夕,早晨到晚上。

Zhènghǎo tàishǐ cí yóu liáodōng huí jiā, mǔqīn biàn mìng tā qù jiùzhù kǒng róng. Tā shuō:“Nǐ hé kǒng róng bìng bù rènshi, dànshì tā zài nǐ zǒu hòu, pài rén fēicháng zhōudào de zhàogù wǒ de shēnghuó. Jīntiān tā bèi dí jūn wéikùn, nǐ yīnggāi gǎnjǐn qù jiù tā a!” Tàishǐ cí gǎn dào dū chāng chéngxià, chèn yèjiān zhǎo jīhuì jìnrù chéngnèi, bàijiàn kǒng róng. Kǒng róng biàn pài tàishǐ cí qù zhǎo liúbèi bān jiùbīng. Tàishǐ cí lái dào píngyuán, duì liúbèi shuō:“Wǒ yǔ kǒng róng fēi qīn fēi gù, dàn dōu shì jiǎng dàodé rényì de rén. Jīn guǎn hài bàoluàn, kǒng róng bèi wéi, wēizàidànxì. Nín yǒu rényì zhī míng, néng jiù rén Zhī jí. Yīncǐ kǒng róng ràng wǒ màozhe shēngmìng wéixiǎn túchū chóngwéi xiàng nín qiújiù.” Liúbèi wén yán, gōngjìng de huídá:“Kǒng róng zhīdào zhè rén shìjiān yǒu wǒ liúbèi zhège rén ma? Tài kàndeqǐ wǒle.” Liúbèi yúshì lìjí Diàoqiǎn jīngbīng sānqiān gēnsuí tàishǐ cí chí jiù dū chāng, huángjīn jūn tīng shuō yǒu jiùbīng qián lái, biàn sìsàn ér qù. Chéngyǔ “wēizàidànxì” běnyì shì zhǐ wéixiǎn jiù zài zǎowǎn zhī jiān; hòulái rénmen chángyòng tā lái xíngróng wéixiǎn jiù zài yǎnqián, qíngkuàng shífēn jǐnjí. Dànxì, zǎochen dào wǎnshàng.

Jack is a good student and an intelligent boy. He likes to study arithmetic, and he can do all of the arithmetic problems in his book easily.

One day on his way to school Jack passed a fruit store. There was a sign in the window which said, “Apple-Six for five cents.” An idea came to Jack and he went into the store.

“How much are the apples?” he asked the store.

“Six for five cents.”

“But I don’t want six apples.”

“How many apples do you want?”

“It is not a question of how many apples I want. It is a problem in arithmetic.”

“What do you mean by a problem in arithmetic?” asked the man.

“Well, if six apples are wroth five cents, then five apples are worth four cents, four apples are worth three cents, three apples are worth rwo cents, two apples are worth one cent and one apple is worth nothing. I only want one apple, and if one apple is worth nothing then it is not necessary for me to pay you.”

Jack picked out a good apple, began to eat it, and walked happily out of the store. The man looked at the young boy with such surprise that he could not say a word.

Jiékè jiǎnle yīgè hǎo píngguǒ, kāishǐ chīle qǐlái, ránhòu xìnggāocǎiliè de mài chūle diàn mén. Nàgè shòuhuòyuán chījīng de wàngzhe zhège xiǎo nánhái, yījù huà yě shuō bu chūlái.

無可奈何

西漢時期,統治者橫徵暴斂,百姓怨聲載道,苦不堪言。他們紛紛舉行起義,自立旗號,攻打城池,奪取糧倉,釋放死囚,殺官員,在鄉里搶劫富豪,救濟貧民,響應者不計其數。

起義震驚了皇帝,他急忙派重兵前去鎮壓。然而,起義的隊伍卻越戰越勇,有不可阻擋之勢。皇帝只得調集了更多的軍隊,執行殘酷的殺戮政策,一下子殺了一萬多人,還殺了給起義軍運送糧食的幾千人,這樣才捕獲了一些起義軍首領。但是那些被打散的起義者和沒被殺死的人,又重新聚集起來,他們往往成幫結夥地襲擊官軍,鬧得聲勢很大,統治者心中既恨又怕,但又對起義軍無可奈何。

於是朝廷又發布命令,規定:對於起義軍沒有發覺或者已經發覺而沒有捕獲的,凡年俸祿在二千石以下的主要責任官吏,一律處死。打這以後,小官吏怕殺頭,雖有農民起義者也不敢揭發,怕揭發了抓不住人,自己犯法並牽連郡太守,而郡太守也不願意他們揭發,所以,起義軍隊伍越來越壯大,嚴重動搖了西漢王朝的統治。

在這個故事中,“無可奈何”用來形容統治者對起義恨之入骨,想要消滅他們,卻毫無辦法。

後來人們用“無可奈何”表示沒有任何辦法,或無辦法可想。

Yúshì cháotíng yòu fābù mìnglìng, guīdìng: Duìyú qǐyì jūn méiyǒu fājué huòzhě yǐjīng fājué ér méiyǒu bǔhuò de, fán nián fènglù zài èrqiān shí yǐxià de zhǔyào zérèn guānlì, yīlǜ chǔsǐ. Dǎ zhè yǐhòu, xiǎo guānlì pà shā tóu, suī yǒu nóngmín qǐyì zhě yě bù gǎn jiēfā, pà jiēfāle zhuā bù zhùrén, zìjǐ fànfǎ bìng qiānlián jùn tàishǒu, ér jùn tàishǒu yě bù yuànyì tāmen jiēfā, suǒyǐ, qǐyì jūn duìwu yuè lái Yuè zhuàngdà, yánzhòng dòngyáole xīhàn wángcháo de tǒngzhì. Zài zhège gùshì zhōng,“wúkěnàihé” yòng lái xíngróng tǒngzhì zhě duì qǐyì hèn zhī rùgǔ, xiǎng yào xiāomiè tāmen, què háo wú bànfǎ. Hòulái rénmen yòng “wúkěnàihé” biǎoshì méiyǒu rènhé bànfǎ, huò wú bànfǎ kě xiǎng.

A friend of mine was giving an English lesson to a class of adult who had recently come to live in the United States. After placing quite a number of everyday objects on a table, he asked various members of the class to give him the ruler, the book, the pen and so on. The class went very smoothly and the students seemed interested and serious about the work that they were engaged in until when my friend turned to an Italian student and said, “Give me the kays.” The man looked surprised and somewhat at a loss. Seeing this, my friend thought that the student hadn’t heard him clearly, so he repeated. “Give me the kays.” The Italian shrugged his shoulders. Then, he threw his arms around the teacher’s neck and kissed him on both cheeks.

Zài yī zhāng zhuōzi shàng bǎile xǔduō rìcháng yòngpǐn zhīhòu, tā qǐng quán bān tóngxué gěi tā tiāo chū chǐzi, shūběn, gāngbǐ děng. Kè jìnxíng dé jǐngrán yǒu xù, xuéshēngmen duì zìjǐ suǒ zuò de sìhū hěn gǎn xìngqù, yě hěn rènzhēn. Hòulái lún dào yī míng láizì yìdàlì de xuéshēng, wǒ de péngyǒu shuō:“Gěi wǒ yàoshi.” Nà rén kàn qǐlái fēicháng chījīng, yě yǒudiǎn shǒuzúwúcuò. Kàn dào zhè zhǒng qíngkuàng, wǒ de péngyǒu xiǎng shì tā méiyǒu tīng qīngchu, yúshì yòu chóngfùle yībiàn:“Gěi wǒ yàoshi.” Nà wèi yìdàlì xuéshēng sǒngle sǒngjiān. Jiēzhe, tā shēn chū gēbo lǒu zhù lǎoshī de bózi zài shuāng jiá shàng qīnle liǎng xià.

西晉初年,朝中有位大臣名叫滿奮。他身材高大魁梧,看上去體格似乎很健壯,但事實並非如此。他生來體弱,尤其怕冷。每當冬天來臨,京城洛陽北風呼嘯,雪花紛飛時,他就整天待在家裡。在這些寒冷的日子裡,他住的房屋不但門窗關得嚴嚴實實,而且還要掛上厚厚的簾幕。有時呼嘯的風聲傳入他的耳中,他都會感到冷氣入骨,坐立不安。

有一天,晉武帝想要跟滿奮談論一下朝政,便派人把滿奮叫到宮中。晉武帝在偏殿接見了滿奮,讓他在面向北邊窗子的位置坐下來。雖然窗子上有琉璃可以擋風,但是畢竟琉璃是透明的,他總覺得和沒有一樣,仍然感到北風凜冽,寒氣逼人。滿奮是和晉武帝坐在一起,雖然感到寒冷,也不敢把自己的苦處說出來。晉武帝見他表情難受,知道他可能是怕風的緣故,就笑著問道:“你為什麼這樣怕風啊?”滿奮彎下身子回答:“吳地的水牛怕熱,所以見到月亮就以為是太陽,便喘起氣來。臣一向怕冷,見了寒風,就像吳牛喘月一樣,會冷得發抖。”晉武帝聽了哈哈大笑。

我國古代江淮一帶屬於吳地,這裡的水牛被稱為吳牛。水牛怕熱,喜歡泡在水里。到了晚上,水牛看見月亮,誤以為是太陽,便嚇得大喘起來。

後來,人們把“吳牛喘月”作為成語,比喻因為疑心而感到害怕。

Wú niú chuǎn yuè

Xījìn chū nián, cháo zhōng yǒu wèi dàchén míng jiào mǎn fèn. Tā shēncái gāodà kuíwú, kàn shàngqù tǐgé sìhū hěn jiànzhuàng, dàn shìshí bìngfēi rúcǐ. Tā shēnglái tǐ ruò, yóuqí pà lěng. Měi dāng dōngtiān láilín, jīngchéng luòyáng běi fēng hūxiào, xuěhuā fēnfēi shí, tā jiù zhěng tiān dài zài jiālǐ. Zài zhèxiē hánlěng de rìzi lǐ, tā zhù de fángwū bùdàn ménchuāng guān de yán yánshí shí, érqiě hái yào guà shàng hòu hòu de lián mù. Yǒushí hūxiào de fēngshēng chuán rù tā de ěr zhōng, tā dūhuì gǎndào lěngqì rùgǔ, zuòlìbù’ān. Yǒu yītiān, jìn wǔdì xiǎng yào gēn mǎn fèn tánlùn yīxià cháozhèng, biàn pài rén bǎ mǎn fèn jiào dào gōng zhōng. Jìn wǔdì zài piān diàn jiējiànle mǎn fèn, ràng tā zài miànxiàng běibian chuāngzi de wèizhì zuò xiàlái. Since Jack is not very talkative, I asked, “What did you say to them?”

秦始皇是我國的第一個皇帝,可他只當了十二年的皇帝就死了,把皇位傳給了二兒子胡亥,也就是秦二世。秦二世當了皇帝,和他的老爹一樣橫徵暴斂,老百姓的生活很困難。大家再也活不下去了,公元前209年,陳勝和吳廣率先在大澤鄉造反,天下群雄紛紛響應。

項梁他們家在戰國時世代擔任楚國的將軍,他和他的侄子項羽都是有雄心的人,也想爭奪天下。起兵前,他找來了素有賢德之名的會稽代理太守殷通,說:“陳勝他們在長江以西都造反了,現在是上天要滅秦的時候了。我覺得,先下手的話可以迅速地制服敵人,要是下手晚了,只能等著被敵人制服了。(原文是:’先發製人,後發製於人。’)”殷通是個讀書人,哪知其中的深淺,當場讚歎道:“聽說您出身楚國的將軍世家,起兵的事兒就一切聽您做主了。”項梁讓殷通找來了項羽,項羽佩戴著寶劍進了屋,殷通連忙起身相迎,結果被項羽一劍割下了腦袋,一命嗚呼了。可憐的太守成了“先發製人”這個謀略的最早犧牲品。然後,項樑和項羽收服了殷通的軍隊,從此東征西戰,爭奪天下。

Many years after receiving my graduate degree, I returned to the State University of New York at Binghamton as a faculty member. One day in a crowded elevator, someone remarked on its inefficiency. I said the elevators had not changed in the 20 years since I began there as a student.

When the door finally opened, I felt a compassionate pat on my back, and turned to see an elderly nun smiling at me. “You’ll get that degree, dear,” she whispered. “Perseverance is a virtue.”
