Dragon’s Back  龙脊(lóng jǐ )

The Dragon’s back is one of the most exhilarating hikes on HongKong Island. The route lies along the crest of a coastal ridge, with majestic vistas out to sea and across the Island. Visually stunning, the route encircles Mount Collinson and continues to Big Wave Bay.

Attractions

A ridgetop path winds along the Dragon’s Back. To the west Stanley and Tai Tam reveal peaks and headlands, bays and coves. To the east the ocean coastline extends out to sea. Rocky and wild, it stretches from Cape Collision, past Big Wave Bay and thence on to Shek O. Farthest out is Cape D’aguilar, site of Hong Kong’s first Marine Reserve.

(shān jǐ liǎng miàn dōu shòu hǎi fēng chuī fú ,xī miàn yuǎn wàng chì zhù zhèng tān yǐ jí dà tán hǎi wān ,dōng miàn kě yǐ tiào wàng zhěng gè gǎng dǎo de dōng miàn hǎi yù 。lù jìng biàn bù shí jiē ,cóng gē lián chén shān kāi shǐ jīng guò dà làng wān zhí dá shí ào 。zuì yuǎn kě dào dá xiāng gǎng de dì yī gè hǎi àn bǎo hù qū -hè zuǐ 。)

Hikers always choose to go there by hiking on Pottinger Gap, following the signposted route. From there, with views of coastal cliffs, one can take a zigzag path that drops down to Big Wave Bay—and look back to the Dragon’s Back. Big Wave Bay is only a short walk or taxi ride from Shek O.

The Dragon’s Back’s steep slopes help create strong wind thermals, so it is one of HongKong’s most popular hang-gliding sites. Visit on a weekend to witness aerial thrills and multi-coloured “kites”.

Ngong Ping, Ma On Shan

Ngong Ping, an upland plateau, lies between urban Shan Tin valley and the less developed Sai Kung. Easily reached from either direction, the charm of Ngong Ping is that- once on its heights- the areas below are entirely lost to sight. Grassy uplands and a sweeping sky are the only presence.

Attractions

Ngong Ping lies in the Ma On Shan Country Park, on the undulating plateau just south of Pyramid Hill. The climb there, from Tai Shui Tseng village, is steep- but for anyone who is reasonably fit quite easy.

Arrived at the top, amidst the grasspy rises, a little farther on, is an old village nestled in a hollow. The place gives its name to the Ngong Ping plateau- although its fields are grown over and thick woodland hides the original hamlet. To the north stands is the symmetrical profile of Pyramid Hill. One is totally alone with nature- amidst grasses, shrubs, trees, earth and rock. There is not a single building in site.

Getting there

Take the MTR to Choi Hung, and catch Minibus 1A or Bus 92. After descending into the Sai Kung valley, alight near Tai Shui Tseng turnoff and walk up to that village- from where the trail is signposted to Ngong Ping. Or go on to Sai Kung, and take another minibus to Po Lo Che, where there is a shorter walk to Tai Shui Tseng.
